HALLOWEEN II: the mask of narcissm by Ralph VanOrden, husband of the blogger (my claim to fame)

Thanks Jeannie for your profound INSIGHTS in the previous blog. It stimulated some ideas that I can’t resist sharing.

Sometimes our religious belief system can allow us to hide from our true selves. We get our pat-on-the-back for our efforts to look good and impress others while hiding from who we really are. Real Christianity makes us examine our motives. We we cannot fool God. He knows us better than we know ourselves. If our motivation for doing good is to be noticed for our piousness, then “we have our reward”.

True Christianity seems to be designed to not only introduce us to the true God but also to the true us. I have seen the tendency in myself and others to hide our sins rather than be know for the true us. The result is usually a web of deceit that adversely affects ourselves and others. Perhaps that is why the day will come when those sins will be shouted upon housetops. I would rather deal with mine now.

Thank God for religious truth that allows us the freedom to face reality and become the best we can through the grace of Christ. No longer looking through a glass-darkly. What would we do without the Atonement and repentance? Being born again through His precious Blood. Finding the very seeds of godliness within us. Overcoming the secular and individual narcissism of society and finding our true selves.
